Share

This week, the Easthampton, Mass., Board of Health approved a generational tobacco ban that will ban anyone born after 2005 from buying tobacco and nicotine products, in hopes it will reduce the city’s smoking rates.

Easthampton’s ban goes into effect on Jan. 1, 2027, and when it does, the city will join Amherst, Brookline, Hopkinton, Newton, Northampton and Belchertown as cities in Massachusetts to have passed a generational tobacco ban. Northampton’s ban is set to go into effect on July 1 after being approved in mid-April.

Bills have also been introduced to the state legislature, though they are still moving through the legislative process.

Easthampton is home to approximately 16,000 people.
