While the bundle may have a sticker with a ghost-like figure on it, Viso Horny’s Ligador Fantasma isn’t a Halloween-themed cigar, but rather a tribute to the people who live in Nicaragua and blend the cigars so many people smoke, often in anonymity and referred to as ghost blenders.
Tyler Jeffery, founder of Viso Horny, described the backstory of the line on Instagram:
Back in October, I spent a few days at Fábrica Oveja Negra in Estelí with James Brown and Angela Brown, my second visit to their factory. Then drove down to San Juan del Sur to crash with Skip (Martin of Fábrica de Tabacos Nica Sueño/RoMa Craft Tobac) for the weekend.
I was telling him how much I love coming to Nicaragua: the culture, the language, the tobacco, the blending. I told him it’s funny how a lot of cigars get built from a distance: a message to the factory, a note to make it creamier or stronger, and the brand owner’s name goes on the band. Maybe they come down for Puro Sabor, pose for a few pictures, and call it a trip. Now, plenty of people genuinely spend a ton of time in the factory, but people do, do this.
Specifically, Jeffery cited a number of people who have helped him in his cigarmaking journey, including the Browns, Martin, Alex Nowogrodzka of Nica Sueño, Gustavo Cura and Angel Oliva III of Oliva Tobacco Co., and Mo Maali of Patina Cigars.

The cigar is a 5 x 50 robusto with a barber pole design made from corojo and candela wrappers of undisclosed origins, the latter of which gives the cigar its green stripe. Underneath them is a habano binder, also of undisclosed origin, while the fillers come from Nicaragua and the U.S. The cigars are made at Fábrica Oveja Negra in Estelí, Nicaragua, best known as the home of Black Label Trading Co. and its Black Works Studio sub-brand designed to show off the artisan prowess of the factory.
Production is limited to 5,000 cigars, split ip into 500 paper-wrapped bundles of 10 cigars. Each bundle has an MSRP of $150, while individual cigars are priced at $15.

The Viso Horny Ligador Fantasma lacks an identifying band, which I’m not crazy about, especially since there’s a sticker on the packs and I think a version of it would look great on the cigars. All three cigars look good; the third cigar looks a bit out of round and also has some bigger veins on the candela leaf, which stand out like a crease in the leaf. The twisted, fantail caps all look good, though the third cigar isn’t as widely spread out as the other two, but that’s not an issue for me. When it comes to creating the barber pole design, all three cigars do it well, with the second standing out because the green stripes look just a touch wider than on the other two cigars. In terms of density, the first cigar has a bit of give, the second cigar is notably firmer but with a few soft spots, and the third is consistently firm but not hard. That all said, the heads of the second and third cigars are noticeably firmer than the lower four-plus inches. The first cigar’s aroma is cool and creamy at first, but a mix of loose soil and black pepper takes over the finish, with the pepper lingering for quite a while. The second cigar is largely the same, just less intense on both sides, while the third is a more simplistic and dry aroma marked by bread crust and black pepper. The first cigar’s cold draw is smooth and easy, probably a touch more open than ideal but nothing I take issue with, while the profile is a pretty standard dry tobacco sensation. The second cigar’s cold draw is definitely firm and feels like the cigar may be overfilled a bit, a thought reinforced when I feel just how firm the head of the cigar. It’s also not terribly distinct flavor-wise outside of dry tobacco with a bit of generic sweetness. The third cigar has the best cold draw of the three, while the flavor has a touch of the candela grassiness atop a light woodiness and pepper, also my favorite of the three.
The first puffs of the Viso Horny Ligador Fantasma have a dry flavor and a slightly thin body, a combination that hits my taste buds in both a familiar and distinct way. Some soft creaminess comes in not long after to add to the body and give the profile a bit of sweetness. Retrohales are a bit all over the place, ranging from pretty tame with the pepper but forthcoming with supporting notes, offering creaminess, a bit of damp wood, bread crust, and just the slightest touch of earth, to being very pepper-forward and almost singular. The third cigar, which seems destined to be my favorite, has the best balance of flavors, all contributing fairly even amounts to the profile, while some recently-arrived creaminess provides another layer of flavor. That flavor sits around medium-plus in the first third, while the body of the smoke is largely medium-minus, and the strength of the cigar is mild. While the quality of the draws vary, the burn lines are all even and smoke production is good.

A shift to a more powdery texture of the smoke starts off the second third of the Viso Horny Ligador Fantasma. The flavor gets woodier, with a bit of a damp tanginess now driving that component, while the black pepper gets a bit crisper with a long, lingering finish. There are touches of smoked orange and other sweet notes that show up ahead of and through the midpoint, a sensation that reminds me of any number of cocktail garnishes as well as a bit of aged rum. Retrohales are bright and crisp with pepper, but the combination with the flavor gives the Viso Horny Ligador Fantasma a really enjoyable level of complexity that takes this section to its conclusion. Flavor is medium-full, body is medium, and strength is mild. Construction continues the theme from the first third: draws of varying quality, consistently even burn lines, and solid smoke production, but combustion feels like it’s starting to struggle, with the second cigar needing attention from my lighter.

The retrohales and ambient smoke that get in the nose are quite peppery and full-bodied as the final third of the Viso Horny Ligador Fantasma, each delivering a fairly intense tickle of my nostrils. The flavor begins to get a bit earthier, and I can feel a bit of heat entering the profile around the two-inch mark. While there’s some heat in the final puffs, there’s also a thick dollop of vanilla cream that joins the profile, an unexpected but welcome addition. Flavor finishes medium-full, body is medium-plus and strength is medium-minus, but not particularly noticeable. The first cigar has some combustion issues, the second cigar’s draw remains firm, and the third cigar doesn’t have any issues as long as I take regular puffs. All three cigars have very even burn lines and produce good amounts of smoke.

Final Notes
- Jeffery also said that the cigar making process that inspired Ligador Fantasma was reminiscent of how The Postal Service, an indie pop band from Seattle, would make some of its records, specifically, the album “Give Up.”
- “Jimmy Tamborello builds the track, ships it off, Ben Gibbard lays down vocals, and they’re never even in the same room. But both names are on the record. Nobody pretends Tamborello didn’t build it,” Jeffery said in an Instagram post.
- That process arose out of scheduling conflicts between the two members, who would send DATs (digital audio tapes) back and forth so each could work on their respective parts. It’s also what gave the band its name, a nod to how the bandmates shipped those tapes to each other.
- It’s kind of fascinating—and a good reminder of where we came from—to think about the above in light of the cloud and numerous online storage providers.
- Earlier this year, Jeffery purchased Pipe World, an Austin, Texas-based retailer. Pipe World is licensed to be the wholesale distributor of Viso Horny, which is part of his El Bebe Grande Cigar, LLC company.
- Going back to the cigar, the second cigar had a uniquely bad combustion rate compared to the other two, so much so that it cost the final score several points. I could tell from the cold draw that it felt too firm, but not so much so that I expected the issues I encountered. They start around the midway point and persist through the cigar. It had me wondering if the bunch was so tight that it couldn’t get enough ambient air to stay lit in between puffs.
- Beyond whatever the combustion issues do to the flavor, it also changes the subjective feel of the cigar experience. While I try to avoid factoring it into a score, unneceesary amounts of frustration certainly don’t help anything.
- I can’t say the Viso Horny Ligador Fantasma offered much nicotine strength. There is a little bit in the final third, enough to register but not enough to impart much of an effect.
- The cigars for this review were purchased by halfwheel.

- The company lists these as a 5 x 50 robusto. The numbers above are the measurements we found for the three cigars used for this review.
- Final smoking time was one hour and 50 minutes on average.
- Site sponsor Small Batch Cigar carries the Viso Horny Ligador Fantasma.

Overall Score
I’m really glad we smoke three cigars for our reviews, as it was that third cigar that performed the best of the three. The first two were fine, fairly familiar with their flavor and with good but not perfect construction and combustion. But the third cigar gave me an experience similar to seeing someone learning something be able to perform it, and do so impressively at that. The flavors are both balanced and complex, the components brighter and more defined, and the combination is more layered, covering a broader range of sensations, and ultimately, much more rewarding. I wish the third cigar would have been the baseline for the other two, but that’s the reality of handmade products where each one is truly unique. If you’re fortunate enough to get the experience I had with that third cigar, I have no doubt you’ll really enjoy the experience just like I did.
