J.C. Newman Cigar Company has announced it has added a 5 x 56 Robusto size to its Yagua line. It’s only the second size to be released in the line and the first addition since the line launched in a Toro in 2019. The new size is currently shipping.
Yagua is unique because it is rolled without a cigar mold, but rather with the frond of a Yagua tree. The project was spearheaded by Drew Newman who became intrigued by hearing a story from the J.C. Newman PENSA factory manager Lazario Lopez on how his grandfather would use this technique to make cigars. It was this technique that inspired the line. The end result of this technique is that no two cigars are alike as it will have a different formation. Yagua is a line produced on a limited-basis because it involves more labor.
“Yagua is a difficult cigar to roll because we use an underfermented Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper, blend the filler tobaccos differently, and do not use the usual tools and techniques of a cigar factory,” said Drew Newman of J.C. Newman Cigar Company in a press release. “As the wrapper is not fully fermented, we have to age the cigars for a full year after they are rolled.”
