On Monday, June 22, Founders Cigar Co.’s began shipping a new cigar that was created to celebrate two different milestones: the company’s fifth anniversary in business and the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
Declaration is a 5 1/2 x 43 corona vitola made with a Pennsylvania broadleaf wrapper, an Ecuadorian habano binder and a filler blend of Nicaraguan criollo 98 ligero and seco tobaccos. The cigars are being produced at Tabacalera Las Lavas S.R.L. in the Dominican Republic.
Each cigar has an MSRP of $13.76, and production is limited to 250 boxes of 25 cigars.

“The Declaration of Independence was one of the boldest statements ever made,” said Angelo Fraboni, co-founder of Founders Cigar Co., in a press release. “When the colonies declared independence from Great Britain in 1776 they were making a clear and unwavering statement about who they were and what they believed. In many ways this cigar represents our own declaration as a company.”
According to the company, numerous details about the Declaration release are meant to honor specific historical facts about the U.S. The number of boxes being released honors this year’s 250th anniversary of the country, while the $13.76 MSRP represents both the 13 original colonies and 1776, the year that the Declaration of Independence was adopted.
In addition, the Pennsylvania broadleaf wrapper was selected in part because Pennsylvania—specifically the city of Philadelphia—was where most of the delegates in the Continental Congress signed the Declaration of Independence in 1776.
