Davidoff Puro Dominicano Corona Larga (Black Band) | Agile Cigar Review

Share

Today, we are reviewing the Davidoff Puro Dominicano in the Corona Larga size. This is the fourth installment of Davidoff’s Black Band series. Davidoff launched the Black Band Series in 2013 with the Davidoff Nicaragua, an all-Nicaraguan tobacco cigar made in the Dominican Republic. For the Puro Dominicano, Davidoff goes in a different direction, this time creating an all-Dominican cigar. Puro Dominicano dates back to 2009, when it was one of Davidoff’s first cigars made with all-Dominican tobacco. In 2018, it was re-released as part of the limited Vault Series. Earlier this year, Davidoff added Puro Dominicano to the Black Band Series. While it still features all-Dominican tobaccos, this time it comes in an all-new blend.

SPECIFICATIONS

Davidoff has not shared details about the Black Band Puro Dominicano blend beyond confirming it is 100% Dominican tobacco. The tobaccos for the Black Label blend come from six distinct Dominican terroirs. Davidoff has also stated the tobaccos have a combined age of 32 years. Davidoff produces it at its TABADOM facility in the Dominican Republic. The Corona Larga has the thinnest ring gauge and is the longest in the Puro Dominicano series, measuring 44 x 5 7/8.

PERFORMANCE

The Puro Dominicano Corona Larga opened up with more notes of sweet natural tobacco and cedar (primary). It also had notes of mushroom, hay, and black pepper. Like the Perfecto, natural tobacco and cedar became primary, with mushroom, hay, and pepper secondary. A layer of black pepper appeared on the retrohale. Cedar notes took over as the primary note before the midway point. Cedar remained primary for the duration of the cigar experience. The one difference was that the pepper notes increased in the second half and were the most prominent secondary note by the midway point. When the Puro Dominicano Corona Larga came to a close, it finished with a soft, cool nub.

The Puro Dominicano Corona Larga delivered medium strength, medium-bodied flavors from start to finish. There wasn’t much variance in intensity, but the strength and body balanced each other nicely. The burn was uneven at times (and not pretty) and required more touchups than I prefer. At the same time, it wasn’t a meandering burn. One of the two cigars I smoked had a tighter draw than I preferred.

OVERALL ASSESSMENT

Final Thoughts

Overall, I consider the Corona Large my favorite in the Puro Dominicano series. I was particularly impressed with it after the trade show. In terms of flavor, it stands out as the best in the line. If it had received an “excellent” rating for burn and draw, it would have scored even higher. While an 87-point rating is respectable, it is slightly lower than what I would expect from Davidoff. I would definitely like to revisit this cigar in this size, as I believe there is more potential to explore. For now, I would rate this cigar as worthy of trying a sample.
