On Monday, Aug. 3, Scandinavian Tobacco Group (STG)’s two U.S. handmade cigar divisions—Forged Cigar Co. and General Cigar Co.—will increase prices for the cigars they sell.
STG’s American portfolio—headlined by brands such as Alec Bradley, CAO, Macanudo and the non-Cuban Cohiba—has nearly 750 SKUs between the two divisions.

Retailers will see two different price increases. For more than 80 percent of the items, the wholesale price, the price the retailer pays before any discounts, shipping or added taxes and fees, is increasing by an average of 4.2 percent. A little more than 100 items aren’t increasing, which drops the overall change to effectively 3.5 percent. Around 2 percent of items are getting a double-digit percentage bump, the largest of which, the Punch Deluxe Chateau Maduro, tops out at 15.3 percent.
Additionally, since the implementation of Trump’s global tariff scheme last year, STG has added an import charge to all orders. That is increasing from 6 percent to 7 percent. This means that even the 100+ SKUs that aren’t having an increase to their wholesale price will cost more going forward.
In a letter to retailers, Gene Richter, STG’s vp of sales for North America, cited inflation as the reason for the price increases. He reiterated the company’s position that if the tariffs are removed, STG will drop the 7 percent import charge.
Last week, the Trump administration introduced a new round of tariffs that kept the rate the same for cigars from Honduras (10 percent) but increased the tariffs from the Dominican Republic and Nicaragua from 10 percent to 12.5 percent. STG owns factories in all three countries.
