Dairy Queen Classic Hot Dog

Today, we are reviewing the Classic Hot Dog from Dairy Queen. This marks our first evaluation of a Dairy Queen product. While Dairy Queen is primarily known for its ice cream and frozen treats, it also offers a variety of food items. A specific subset of Dairy Queen locations, known as DQ Grill & Chill, operates as “Quick Service” restaurants, providing a full menu of food alongside their ice cream and frozen delights. The Classic Hot Dog we are reviewing today was purchased from a DQ Grill & Chill.e is a subset of Dairy Queen franchises known as DQ Grill & Chill. These are what they call “Quick Service” restaurants, offering a full menu of food in addition to ice cream and frozen delights. The Classic Hot Dog we are reviewing today came from a DQ Grill & Chill.

In 1938, the Dairy Queen brand was founded by John Fremont McCullough and his son Alex, along with their friend Sherb Noble. The McColloughs convinced Noble to carry their ice cream formula in his restaurant. By 1940, the trio opened their first Dairy Queen outlet in Joliet, Illinois. The company is today owned by Berkshire Hathaway and is headquartered in Bloomington, Minnesota (where the largest Dairy Queen outlet is located). As of 2018, Dairy Queen had 4,455 franchises domestically and approximately 6,800 worldwide.

The DQ Grill & Chill franchise is relatively new, with the first location opening in 2001 in Chattanooga, Tennessee. These locations are larger than standard Dairy Queen outlets. While they weren’t the first Dairy Queens to offer menu items beyond ice cream and frozen treats, DQ Grill & Chill restaurants are better equipped to function like typical fast-food establishments.

The Appearance (*)

This is a new section we have recently introduced. This will be included (where we can) in Coalition Eats reviews. It is not part of the scoring, but this section compares the actual product with how it was advertised. In this case, we could not get an exact picture of the toppings on the Classic Hot Dog, but I actually think the product looked better than the picture. Still, because it’s not exact, this appearance comparison gets an Incomplete.

The Experience

We use the same scoring algorithm we used to assess other types of hot dogs with toppings.

  • Meat (Hot Dog): 4 points
  • Bun: 2 points
  • Condiments: 2 points
  • Intangibles: 2 points

Meat (Hot Dog)

Dairy Queen refers to its Classic Hot Dog as a beef wiener. According to the ingredients, the hot dog’s meat is beef. Although the restaurant operates as a Grill & Chill, Dairy Queen states that it steams its hot dogs. From what I understand, the hot dogs are pre-cooked before they are steamed.

Dairy Queen (DQ) Hot Dog Review

The Hot Dog itself has a mild, traditional beef-and-pork frankfurter flavor with a slight smoky note. It’s not as heavily charred as a backyard-grilled hot dog because the reheating process is designed for speed and consistency. At the same time, it had a decent snap. Overall, this was a pretty tasty hot dog.

Score: 2.25 out of 4.00 points

Bun

The buns are also steamed. What I liked about this bun was that it wasn’t soggy. Hot dogs don’t require a hard bun. There was enough of a crust on this bun to satisfy. It was a little soft in the middle, but it really wasn’t overly soggy. On one of my buns, there were a couple of flour spots. Two of mine had a slight bun split baked in. Overall, I found this bun tasty.

Condiments

As we usually do, let’s break down the individual components:

  • Yellow Mustard: This is a pretty basic yellow mustard. It is on the mild-to-medium side and features a tangy vinegar component. The mustard was served on the hot dog as I requested.

  • Onions: These are chopped raw onions. There was a nice sweetness to the onion, and I didn’t pick up any harshness. The steaming of the hot dog and the bun started some very early stages of caramelization. The onions still had a nice crunch. Overall, this was a pretty good onion topping.

Intangibles

As I always do, I assess whether the overall experience exceeds the sum of its parts. In this case, the answer is that it is slightly elevated. A good bun and some good condiments enhance the hot dog itself.

Overall, this sandwich wasn’t very messy, aside from a few onions that occasionally fell out. I can tolerate some onions slipping off. I appreciate that Dairy Queen serves its hot dogs in a box, as it helps keep the sandwiches from being served sloppily.

Finally, these aren’t large hot dogs. As mentioned above, you can get two of these for $5.00, and I would recommend that as a minimum if you are going with anything beyond a snack. In fact, I recommend a third.

Score: 1.25 out of 2.00 points

OVERALL EXPERIENCE

The Dairy Classic Hot Dog I ordered was simple – it’s a hot dog, bun, and mustard with some onions. I found that all the components actually tasted quite good. However, none of them really stood out as exceptional. Overall, it was a satisfying experience. I believe that choosing options like chili and cheese would have negatively affected it. As mentioned, you probably will want a minimum of two to three if you are ordering this – or go with a combo. With $3.25 for one and $5.00 for two, this is priced pretty well. It’s not a flashy offering, but it was still a satisfying one. I’d return to this again.
