Whataburger Bacon Wrangler Double Review | Coalition Eats

Today, we review the Whataburger Bacon Wrangler Double. The Bacon Wrangler Double is a limited-edition item reintroduced in 2026, after debuting a year earlier for a limited run. The Wrangler features two Whataburger hamburger patties with American and Monterey cheeses, crispy onion strings, chipotle aioli, pickles, and bacon. When it was released, it was part of Whataburger’s 75th anniversary. Its return for 2026 is another limited run

For 2026, there are five versions of the Bacon Wrangler. Two are hamburger options, and three are chicken options:

• Bacon Wrangler Double Jr: A smaller version of the Bacon Wrangler Double
• Bacon Wrangler Chicken
• Bacon Wrangler Spicy Chicken

Whataburger is an American regional fast food restaurant chain in the Mid-South and Southeast U.S. It’s headquartered in San Antonio, Texas. Harmon Dobson and Paul Burton founded the chain. Whataburger opened its first restaurant in Corpus Christi, Texas, in 1950. Whataburger remained family-owned by the Dobsons until 2019, when the private equity firm BDT & MSD Partners acquired it. Today, the Dobson family still holds a small stake. Whataburger originally focused on hamburgers, but over the years, the chain has expanded its menu to include non-beef offerings.

The Construction

The Bacon Wrangler Double was ordered “as is” with no customizations. However, there were plenty of customizations available for this offering:

The Appearance (*)

One reason why I hear people knock on Whataburger is for appearance. There is some validity to this. As you can see with our thumbnail above, it doesn’t compare to the staged photo. Whataburger burgers are typically received squished. This is not the case with the staged photo below. Unfortunately, Whataburger misses the mark with our comparison test.

The Experience

Meat (Hamburger)

We scored the Bacon Wrangler Double like many other hamburgers we have assessed, including the Bacon Steakhouse Double. As we have been doing for a while, we scored cheese as a condiment. We also scored the bacon as a condiment rather than a meat.

Whataburger has prided itself on fresh, never-frozen burgers cooked to order. I’ve always found Whataburger to deliver a really good hamburger. The Bacon Wrangler Double is an enjoyable burger. It also has a crispy, seared edge that I think really enhances the flavor. While the burgers appear dry, I was surprised they were not – another plus.

Bun

The Bacon Wrangler Double is served on Whataburger’s signature large-size bun. This has a decent crust and is just soft enough on the inside. As mentioned, the bun is lightly toasted. The interesting thing is that these buns seemed to have a slight butteriness I haven’t noticed before. This bun has a decent crust and is soft and pillowy between the crust and inner toasted part. I’d categorize this as a good, average bun. I  like the large size too.

Condiments

As we typically do, let’s break down each condiment on the Bacon Wrangler Double one by one:

• American Cheese (Yellow): The cheese on the Bacon Steakhouse Double was melted well. The cheese is creamy and buttery with a slight tang. When melted, it becomes sauce-like and adds richness without a strong flavor.
• Monterey Cheese (White): I would describe this as smooth and buttery. The cheese had a subtle nuttiness.

• Bacon:  The bacon was plentiful and flavorful. It had a nice smoky taste. It was neither overcooked nor undercooked. This is par for the course for Whataburger. Normally, I like bacon a little well done, but this was good and made a nice contribution to the overall burger.

• Crispy Onions: These are good. They soften a bit on the sandwich because of the moisture from the meat, sauce, and melted cheese. That actually helped keep them on the burger better. They delivered a wonderful toasted sweetness to the burger. While I wish there were more, that might increase the messiness factor.
• Pickle Slices: These are good. They have a nice combination of tanginess, sourness, and saltiness. These were better than those from most chain restaurants.
• Chipotle Aioli: This is a creamy sauce that doesn’t have a mayonnaise taste. There are smoked, garlic, and tangy flavors. This puts some heat (spice) to the burger, but it’s not overwhelming.

Overall, this was a nice arrangement of condiments for this burger.

Intangibles

As always, the first intangible we look at is whether the overall experience of the Bacon Wrangler Double exceeds the sum of its parts. In this case, the creaminess of the cheese, the spiciness of the chipotle aioli, the toasted sweetness of the onion straws, the dill flavors of the pickle, and the smokiness of the bacon all elevate this burger nicely. I wouldn’t say the flavors of the Bacon Wrangler Double come together as well as the Bacon Smokehouse Double, but the Bacon Wrangler Double still delivers a positive experience.

This burger has the right amount of proportions and will definitely fill you up. The one thing I would want is more onion straws, and each time I had the Bacon Wrangler Double, they seemed to skimp on it. On the other hand, more onion straws would make this sandwich messier. This sandwich was only slightly messy.

As I said, this burger will fill you up. If you order this with the Whatameal combination (side/drink), I don’t think you will need to upsize unless you are extra hungry.

OVERALL ASSESSMENT

The Bacon Double Wrangler follows the limited-run Whataburger Bacon Steakhouse Double. If you compare the scores, they’re close, but I gave the Bacon Steakhouse Double a slight edge. At the same time, this is a pretty good limited offering from Whataburger. It’s also a filling offering under $10.00. As I review more fast-food burgers, I’m seeing prices go up, and soon finding one under $10.00 might be rare. That being said, even though the actual product doesn’t look like the advertised product, the Bacon Double Wrangler satisfied me. I’d get it again.
