Today, we are reviewing Wendy’s Pretzel Bacon Pub Chicken Sandwich. This limited-edition offering from Wendy’s launched alongside the return of another limited offering: the Wendy’s Pretzel Bacon Pub Cheeseburger. Earlier this year, Wendy’s ran a promotional campaign called Bring It Back. The campaign let consumers choose a former Wendy’s menu item to bring back. The Pretzel Bacon Pub Cheeseburger won the vote. In August 2026, Wendy’s brought back the Pretzel Bacon Pub Cheeseburger. At the same time, Wendy’s brought back the Pretzel Bacon Pub Chicken Sandwich and Bacon Pub Fries.
Dave Thomas founded Wendy’s in 1969 in Columbus, Ohio. He named the restaurant after his fourth child. It’s headquartered in Dublin, Ohio. Today, the company is part of Triarc, the publicly traded parent company of Arby’s. By 2018, Wendy’s had become the world’s third-largest hamburger chain, behind McDonald’s and Burger King. Wendy’s offers more than hamburgers, including chili, chicken, salad, baked potatoes, and desserts.

The Appearance (*)
The image below is a photo from Wendy’s showcasing the Pretzel Bacon Pub Chicken Sandwich. While the actual photo of a sandwich I received isn’t bad, it lacks the polish of the staged version. One downside to the staged photo is that the bun doesn’t really resemble a traditional pretzel bun. In my experience, the sandwiches I received had more authentic-looking pretzel buns.

Comparison Score: Fair
The Experience
For this evaluation, we scored the chicken sandwich similarly to how we scored other chicken sandwiches, most notably the Chick-fil-A Jalapeño Ranch Club.
- Chicken: 4 points
- Bun: 2 points
- Condiments: 2 points
- Intangibles: 2 points
Chicken
The Pretzel Bacon Pub Chicken features an all-white meat filet, which Wendy’s describes as lightly breaded. Let’s start by examining the filet itself. It is plump, juicy, and most importantly, flavorful. This is the good news. However, the “lightly breaded” coating seems a bit thicker than advertised. It resembles a panko breading, and while frying, it absorbed some oil. The breading also had a slight sweetness. Though it’s not my preferred choice for coating a fried chicken filet, it isn’t bad. The highlight is definitely the quality of the chicken breast, which was very good.
Score: 2.25 points out of 4.00 points.
Bun
I often find the bun on fast-food sandwiches is their Achilles’ heel. However, this is not the case with the Pretzel Bacon Pub Chicken Sandwich. I appreciated that the bun wasn’t overly chewy or doughy while still having a tasty pretzel flavor. It strikes a perfect balance, being neither too sweet nor too salty. The bun has a nice crust and holds the sandwich ingredients well. I also like the cross-split top design.
The bun itself is lightly toasted on the inside. The light toasting was just right.
I also liked the “pretzel char” on the bottom of the bun. It almost seemed a shame that it was at the bottom of the sandwich.

Condiments
There are a lot of condiments on this sandwich, so let’s break them down one by one:
- Crispy Onions: I like crispy onions, and fast-food places tend to use them more sparingly. In most cases, they get soggy on the sandwich. In this case, the onions weren’t crunchy, but they had decent crispness. The coating wasn’t overly spicy, and they had a nice sweet onion flavor.
- Pickles: These are sliced pickles. They had a nice “twang” to them. They had a good dill component and were not overly salty or briny.
- Applewood Smoked Bacon: Wendy’s does a good job with their bacon. It has very good flavor with a nice smokiness. Best of all, it’s a crisp bacon. They also put the right amount. It seems like two to three strips.
- Smoky Honey Mustard: This is the one condiment that didn’t do it for me. While I’m not the biggest fan of honey mustard, I think it can work well in some cases. Unfortunately, it didn’t work here. The flavor is quite sweet, and I found it hard to detect any distinct taste. On the positive side, the sandwich isn’t overpowered by the sauce.
- Beer Cheese Sauce: I’ve had beer cheese sauces before. The one on the Pretzel Bacon Pub Chicken Sandwich has a very subtle beer taste. I would describe it as a mild, creamy sauce. One important thing to note is that this is a sauce, not a melted piece of cheese. Along with the honey mustard, it also helps keep the sandwich from being dry.
- Muenster Cheese: Why don’t more food places serve Muenster cheese on a burger? In this case, the Muenster cheese is melted. It has a slight annatto (orange trim). It’s a milder, creamier Muenster with a slight nutty component.

Intangibles
To start, I always consider whether the overall experience is greater than the sum of its parts, and in this case, it absolutely is. Although I wasn’t a huge fan of the breading, the combination of the juicy chicken filet, pretzel bun, pickles, crispy onions, bacon, and cheeses elevates the dish. While I didn’t particularly enjoy the honey mustard, it didn’t detract from the overall experience. The best part is that no single component is overly dominant; instead, all of the ingredients complement each other beautifully.
I also appreciated how the right proportions of all of the ingredients were used. The weakest component, the honey mustard, was used sparingly. It’s also a filling sandwich.
Finally, even with a lot of condiments, this was only slightly messy. Yes, you are going to lose some of the crispy onions, but I didn’t find beer cheese sauce or honey mustard to drip out.
Score: 1.50 out of 2.00 points
OVERALL EXPERIENCE
I have never ordered the original Wendy’s Chicken Sandwich. Since I’m not the biggest fan of breading, I don’t think the original sandwich would appeal to me. However, the Pretzel Bun and most of the condiments on the Pretzel Bacon Pub Chicken Sandwich are fantastic. They contributed significantly to my score of 6.75 points. Priced at $7.59, it’s also a good value for a filling meal. I would love to see this as a regular menu item at Wendy’s, but since the condiments aren’t standard, I doubt that will happen. Nonetheless, the Pretzel Bacon Pub Chicken Sandwich is something I will definitely order again, and I look forward to trying the Pretzel Bacon Pub Cheeseburger as well.
