Earlier this year, when Vlada Stojanov announced the Somm Premier Cru Petra, the Somm Cigars founder made it clear that there would be two follow-ups to the limited edition Petra. This week, the first of them went on sale.
Like the original cigar, the Somm Premier Cru Petra II is a 6 x 52 toro that was rolled at the Fábrica Centroamericana de Tabaco S.A. factory in Honduras, best known as the home of Cavalier Genève. The new cigar is made with the same tobaccos; only the wrapper and binder have been inverted. Whereas the original cigar used a seven-year-old binder from Jalapa, that tobacco was used as the Petra II’s wrapper. The 14-year-old wrapper from Estelí that was used as the first cigar’s wrapper was used as the binder for the sophomore release.
Inside are the same fillers:
- Condega viso (five years old)
- Estelí seco (six years old)
- Jalapa seco (four years old)
- Jalapa viso (six years old)
The Petra II cigars were rolled in January 2025, a couple of months after the original Petra cigars were made.
Each Petra II has an MSRP of $30 and production was limited to just 1,027 cigars, which are being sold exclusively through Small Batch Cigar.
“I sourced two bales of the 14-year wrapper for this project, but after strict sorting and rejection, the usable yield only supported roughly 1,100 cigars which was the original Petra,” said Stojanov in a press release. “The 14-year old tobacco was incredible, so I decided to invert the binder and wrapper for this release. I’ve approached changing the blend much like champagne makers approach their house style cuvées – aiming to deliver the same, exact experience with the same components in varying ratios. Then I held the release back and compared them until I couldn’t tell the difference between the two. I hope you have a phenomenal experience with Petra II, it was a fantastic journey blending it through a champagne makers lense.”
The cigars were named after his newborn daughter.
Per a press release, there’s an Easter egg related to the bands that will make it easy to tell which release is which, though Stojanov declined to specify what that is.
“As for 3rd (Petra III or P3) release with the 14-year old tobacco in the filler, these are not ready, the blend has gone into a muted phase when I tasted it last month, where the blend has gone from delicious to disjointed, so it’s a wait and see. If it does not turn around in the next six months, it may never get released,” said Stojanov.
