Texas-based Brolo Cigar Co. is ready to ship its first cigars. The boutique company, run by husband-and-wife Joshua and Kaitlyn Stephens, will launch a three-blend core line of Porchlight, Confessional and Back Booth this November.
The cigars are made in Nicaragua at a boutique factory Brolo hasn’t named, and the Stephenses traveled there to develop the blends themselves. The company sums up its approach with the phrase “Patina Over Polish.”
“There’s something special about the people you meet around cigars,” said Joshua Stephens, co-founder of Brolo Cigar Co. “Different backgrounds, different stories, different walks of life. But for an hour or two, none of that really matters. You’re just sitting together, sharing something good. That’s the spirit we wanted to capture with Brolo.”
Each blend comes in a single 5 x 50 Robusto. Porchlight uses an Ecuadorian Corojo wrapper, a Nicaraguan binder and fillers from Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic, and Brolo describes it as medium-bodied with floral, dried fruit and light pepper notes. Confessional is a double-Habano cigar, pairing an Ecuadorian Habano Rosado wrapper with a Nicaraguan Habano binder, with the company listing baking spice, dark fruit, cherry, coffee and red pepper. Back Booth rounds out the line with a Mexican San Andrés maduro wrapper over a Nicaraguan binder and Nicaraguan and Dominican fillers, aimed at darker notes of wood, walnut, cedar and raisin.
Outside the cigars, Brolo has built a following through a Discord community, virtual group smokes and its Light Up & Lean In media platform. It’s also keeping its cigars in brick-and-mortar shops only, with no direct-to-consumer sales, and plans in-store events with the founders.
“Anybody can sell you a cigar,” Stephens added. “What we’re interested in is what happens after you light it. The conversations, the friendships, the stories. We want Brolo to be a reason people linger.”
Brolo will host its launch event on Thursday, November 19 at 7 p.m. at Viso Cigar Lounge, 1521 N. Custer Rd., Ste. 2850, in McKinney, Texas. Shipments to retailers begin November 20. All three cigars come in 20-count boxes, with Porchlight and Confessional priced at $14.75 per cigar and Back Booth at $16.25.
