Tomorrow, Hooten Young will ship a new culebra that ties into the company’s military roots.
The new Hooten Young Gothic Serpent Culebra is a three-piece culebra that is made up of three different 6 x 38 cigars, each of which uses multiple wrappers. While the exact combinations differ, each cigar uses one wrapper from Ecuador and another from Mexico:
- Hooten Young The Gothic Serpent — Ecuador (Connecticut-seed) & Mexico (San Andrés) accents
- Hooten Young Gothic Serpent Culebra 2 — Ecuador (Candela) & Mexico San Andrés
- Hooten Young Gothic Serpent Culebra 3 — Ecuador (Connecticut-seed) & Mexico (San Andrés)
The Gothic Serpent is the star of the show and the only one of the cigars that is actually named. It’s the one that features the darker Mexican tobacco, which is designed to look like the head of the snake. The other two are barber pole cigars, meaning they have two wrapper leaves that are intertwined to create a spiral design.
A culebra, the Spanish word for snake, is made by twisting multiple cigars together. A typical culebra contains three pieces, usually around a petite lancero dimension, that are twisted together after the cigars are rolled, when they are still pliable. They are designed to be smoked as individual cigars.
These cigars were produced by Córdoba & Morales in Nicaragua.
Each culebra, which contains three individual cigars, has an MSRP of $25. The cigars come ship to retailers in three culebra sets, meaning nine total cigars. A total of 1,000 culebras have been made.
Norm Hooten, co-founder of Hooten Young, is a former Delta Force operator, the U.S. Army’s elite tier-one special forces group. He served in Operation Gothic Serpent, which became the Battle of Mogadishu, best known as the real-life event portrayed in the movie “Black Hawk Down.” Eric Bana played Norm “Hoot” Gibson, which combined Hooten and two other operators into a single role.
Hooten Young has leaned heavily into military themes for its cigars. Earlier this week, it shipped a cigar named after Operation Midnight Hammer, the American bombing of Iran last year.
The company has cigars that use a different blend that honor the 25th and 30th anniversaries of the mission.
